Tips for Brides

Posted by shopdressgallery in September 21, 2011

Hello brides and Dress Gallery fans!

Today we wanted to give our brides a few tips when they’re dress shopping. Of course you know the basics: make appointments, bring people you love and trust, do your research on what you like before you come into the store. But there are a few things you might not know about shopping for a bridal gown…

Have an open mind. Sometimes what you’ve originally imagined for yourself isn’t what will look good on you or what you will fall in love with. We tend to know what will look good on your body because we have seen brides like you before – and we helped them find their perfect dress! Listen to suggestions and be open to try on styles you didn’t orginally think you’d like.

Most wedding dresses in stock are not going to be your size. Be aware that wedding dresses run very small and your normal dress size might be a little tight. It’s also hard to tell what some dresses look like if they won’t slide past your hips – but often we only have one dress in stock, so we will try it anyway. We will also put on sizes that are too big for you and use handy-dandy clamps to make them look like they fit.

Be engaged! This seems like it would be obvious, but many women who are not engaged yet want to come in and try on gowns. We discourage it for a few reasons: if he doesn’t propose, you might get your heart broken. If you find a dress you love and purchase it and he never proposes, you’re stuck with a wedding gown. You might be jumping the gun and scare him: not many boyfriends are okay with their girlfriends going to look at bridal gowns. Also, you’re wasting your time. Instead of hunting for bridal gowns before he puts a ring on it, talk to him about where you think your relationship is going. That should give you a pretty clear picture of if you should try on a white dress for him or not. And lastly, it’s rumored that trying on dresses before you’re engaged is bad luck. Yikes!

We will provide you with a bra and petticoat if you want them and we will assist you in putting on the dresses. We help our brides put on the dresses because they’re expensive garments, and we’d hate for something to go wrong while you’re trying on. They are also extremely hard to get on by yourself – we are expert zippers, lacer-uppers, and can wiggle your booty down into that dress with ease! But trying to do it  by yourself can be a challenge. Let us help you feel like a princess! If you’re a little self concious, don’t be, we see lots of brides in their underwear and we all look the same!

At our store, we don’t let you pull dresses for yourself. We leave our dresses in their protective bags on the racks in a specific order so other consultants can find them if they need to. We don’t let our brides pull dresses because we want you to have a good experience, and straining your shoulders from a 20lb dress is not a fun time! They are heavy and expensive and the last thing we want is for you to have to move those dresses. Use your consultants – that’s why we are here!

Know your budget. Most of our gowns start around $800 and go up from there. No, we’re not trying to break the bank, that’s just the average cost of a wedding gown now. If your budget is $500 and under, you might consider saving up or checking our one of our in-stock sales or trunk shows to find a dress. We want you to find the dress of your dreams, and compromising because of the price can also compromise quality, something no bride wants on her wedding day.

Bring in pictures! We love to see pictures of you in dresses, of your favorites from magazines, or on The Knot’s new iPhone app that lets you search for gowns with ease. It’ll help us find the perfect dress from you.

Learn the terminology. If you come in without knowing some basic dress jargon, you might be lost as soon as our consultants start talking to you. But if you know that you like a sweetheart neckline, pickups, ruching, Swarovski embellishment, and a chapel train, we are in business.

We are super excited to go to bridal market this weekend in Chicago. It’s always fun to check out new designers and our old favorites’ new dresses. But it’s also important to realize why we’re going to market: to help people who are in love get married to the person they have always dreamed of. With that, here’s a video (ignore the creepy computer voice) from YouTube that talks about why we wear our wedding rings on our  third finger. So sweet! Enjoy!

We have so many cute new homecoming styles to share with you. Some of our favorites this season are from Jasz Couture, Terani, and Mori Lee’s Sticks’n'Stones. Check out these pictures! We are excited to help girls who are going to the dances and our very special homecoming queen nominees!!

This is Abby Black from Pratt – our first homecoming queen nominee. She looked AMAZING in this blue chiffon mermaid gown. We’re rooting for you Abby! Good luck!

The trends this year are bright jewel tones especially RED, flouncy skirts, bedazzled (yes we said bedazzled) detailing, and short-short-short!

This flouncy patterned style from Jasz Couture will catch your date’s eye AND be dad-approved!

Bedazzled elements are so in this year! Check out this gorgeous number from Terani. We love the beautiful sparkly detail and soft color combo.

Hello gorgeous! This sparkled bodice will catch the light at the dance and the gray skirt will look stunning with some pewter-colored pumps!

We are lucky to have a few one of a kind dresses in…which means no one else in the country has them, and we only have one of each dress. These dresses are not for the faint of heart, however!

These are one-of-a-kind! We love the patterns - can you see a homecoming queen getting crowned in one of these gowns? Think of the pictures! Big props to the girl who is bold enough to wear the paint splatter over leopard print – SO modern and funky!

Come see us – we have dresses coming in every day and would love to be a part of your homecoming memories!

Love and dresses,
